Stable Government now ‘doubly urgent’ – Naughten

Independents’ group ‘remains available’

While there have been calls for Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to postpone ongoing Government formation talks amid growing uncertainty following the Coronavirus outbreak, local TD Denis Naughten has said members of the regional Independent group are ready to support a stable government.

Deputy Naughten has said the eight regional Independents involved would support a new Government provided that two of the three main parties work together.

Speaking to the Roscommon People yesterday (Wednesday), he said that the next government would have difficult decisions to make in tackling the Covid-19 virus. “We have had no further engagement with Fianna Fáil but we remain available and it is up to them to invite us into talks on a Programme for Government. “A stable Government was urgently required before the outbreak of the coronavirus and now it is doubly urgent. The decisions that will made in the coming weeks will have long-term implications for the people of this country as well as the economy,” he said.
