The number of cattle slaughtered in May 2008 was 13.8% lower than in May 2007. A comparison of May 2008 and 2007 figures shows that sheep slaughterings decreased by 17.1 percent, pig slaughterings decreased by 7.2 percent. The number of cattle slaughterings in January-May 2008 was 9.5 percent lower than the corresponding 2007 figure. Over the same period there was a decrease of 6.8 percent in sheep slaughterings and a decrease of 1.6 percent in pig slaughterings. Between the periods January to March 2007 and 2008, Netherlands and Germany recorded increases in pig slaughterings of four percent and 2.9 percent respectively. Spain, France and Poland recorded a decrease of 29.8 percent, one percent and 5.2 percent respectively.
