After all the dust had settled in Tuam on Saturday evening in the aftermath of another famous victory for the Roscommon minor team, Peter Carney, selector (pictured above by Ken Nolan in Tuam), had a smile as big as any as he spoke to the press after the game. ‘It’s very exciting altogether. There is a great buzz in the dressing room after that win. All the lads’ hard work paid off out there today. We are thrilled with the win. ‘Their fighting spirit was great. Their never-say-die attitude and the belief that they showed in the final few minutes was brilliant and they should be commended for that. ‘There was a lot of pressure on those lads today after the way the Roscommon minor team has performed in the last couple of years but they did themselves proud.’ Although they secured the win in extra-time, there were still areas of the performance which management were not entirely happy with. ‘We would be a little bit concerned about the ten or fifteen minutes after half-time when Galway were on top. We struggled in that period and it’s something that seems to be happening in a few games so we just need to work on that. ‘This game should bring this team on great. It is worth months on the training field and what these players need to do is realise that they are as capable as anybody else – as they have just shown today.’ Looking ahead to the Connacht final, Peter acknowledged that the team would be well prepared for the showdown in Castlebar and would be quietly confident going into the game. ‘We have to be hopeful going into the Connacht final and although we would be confident we will not be over-confident. It’s going to be a very good game but we have a score to settle with Mayo so we’ll see how things go’ concluded Peter. – Shane Reynolds.
