There were scenes of wild celebrations as St Michael’s powered to their first junior football championship ‘A’ title in 30 years when they defeated Clann na nGael by 2-17 to 0-9 in Dr Hyde Park on Saturday. The match featured one of the finest individual performances seen in a major county final in many years as St Michael’s joint captain and centre half-forward Fiachra Henry scored an incredible total of 2-12 from frees and play over the hour.
The first half was a very enjoyable affair with the sides level at 0-4 each after 16 minutes but Michael’s got a grip on proceedings after that and when Henry blasted home a 26th minute goal it helped the Cootehall men into a 1-8 to 0-5 lead at the interval. Michael’s were superb in the second half and Fiachra Henry sealed his virtuoso display with a cracking second goal in the 54th minute.
