St Michael’s claim their first junior football championship ‘A’ title in 30 years

There were scenes of wild celebrations as St Michael’s powered to their first junior football championship ‘A’ title in 30 years when they defeated Clann na nGael by 2-17 to 0-9 in Dr Hyde Park on Saturday. The match featured one of the finest individual performances seen in a major county final in many years as St Michael’s joint captain and centre half-forward Fiachra Henry scored an incredible total of 2-12 from frees and play over the hour.

The first half was a very enjoyable affair with the sides level at 0-4 each after 16 minutes but Michael’s got a grip on proceedings after that and when Henry blasted home a 26th minute goal it helped the Cootehall men into a 1-8 to 0-5 lead at the interval. Michael’s were superb in the second half and Fiachra Henry sealed his virtuoso display with a cracking second goal in the 54th minute.
