The curtain goes up on the 21st Anniversary Glinsk Song Contest on Sunday night July 13th in Glinsk Community Centre – amid speculation that the Contest may be coming to the end of the line. Glinsk holds the record for longest running Song Contest ever in Ireland. The first song on the night is ‘Prodigal Son’ which has been written by Stephen Housden and Frank Howson, both of whom are probably better known in Hollywood than in the West of Ireland. Frank has written and directed thirteen movies including ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’. Co-writer, Stephen Housden has had his music featured on the soundtrack of ‘Crocodile Dundee’ and ‘Baywatch’. Strangely enough, the final song on the night ‘New York & You’ also has an American connection as it was written at JFK airport by Sinead Cunningham who now lives in Galway and co-written by Rob Seals. Sean Kelly will be representing the sunny south-east with his song ‘Cold Light of Day’. Sean says he is delighted to have reached the final at Glinsk again. ‘It is essential for song-writers to have a platform to present their work’, he added, ‘and all of us appreciate the hard work and efforts by the Glinsk organisers and their sponsors’. The fact that the number of songs entered in Glinsk this year has been twice the number received over the past few years confirms that songwriters and composers really do need a ‘shop-window’ for their work. The thirteen finalists performing in Glinsk this year will have the biggest audience ever as all songs will be available worldwide through radio station Shannonside/Northern Sound and the world wide web. The organisers of Glinsk Song Contest wish to thank all of their generous sponsors who have made this Contest possible over the years. All patrons are requested to be seated at Glinsk Community Centre not later than 8.40 pm on the night of Sunday July 13th.
