The Roscommon Lions Club hosted an extremely enjoyable Black and White Night in Gleeson’s Townhouse, Roscommon on the 28th of December. All funds raised went to the Lions Club project to purchase, install and maintain defibrillators in public spaces accessible to all members of the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year.
The defibrillators will be placed at strategic locations around the town: Casey’s Filling Station, Athlone Road; The Garda Station; Gleeson’s Townhouse, Market Square and Corrib Filling Station on the Racecourse Road while Larry O’Gara has purchased a defibrillator which will be located inside Rockfords Night Club.
The first phase of the campaign was to provide the defibrillators. The next phase is to train people in the use of them. The Lions Club will be organising Training Courses for the employees of the premises’ where the defibrillators will be located.
However it will be critical for the wider success of the project and for the greatest possible benefit to accrue to the community that as many people as possible undertake the training. The more people trained in the use of the defibrillators maximises the effectiveness of having the defibrillators and provides greater safety for the wider community. The more people trained and living proximate to the defibrillators the better for all of us.
Members of the public are invited to contact any member of the Lions Club or specifically Eamon Gleeson at Gleeson’s Townhouse or Sean Mahon at 086-2370858 or Kathleen Shanagher at 086-3726743 to register their interest in doing the Course and to get information about the Training Courses.
The first Course will be held in early February in Roscommon. The Course will provide training in the use of the defibrillators and also training in the provision of CPR and in the Heimlich manoeuvre. Organisers urge as many people as possible to register their interest.
