The death took place in early December of Willie Ryan, late of Beechwood, Kilteevan, Co. Roscommon. A quiet, self-effacing man, he lived all but two of his 85 years in Kilteevan.
The huge community turn-out and involvement in his funeral reflected the high esteem and respect in which he was held and acknowledged his long involvement in community life. This had ranged from working on the fund-raising carnival committee for the new Church in the 1950s to running a local water scheme in the 1970s to his long-term work in the restoration and maintenance of the old graveyard for over 23 years.
A devout Christian, he had been an early Minister of the Word and until last June he was one of the Church collectors at Sunday mass.
He had a deep interest is sport especially football, both gaelic and soccer, having played in his youth in the 1940s for the Kilteevan team and in the Roscommon Street Leagues. He resumed his playing when he returned in the late 1940s from a year tour of duty with the RAF in India and Sri Lanka (Ceylon).
On his retirement from Bord na Mona, Mountdillion, after 37 year service, he had time for his gardening and vegetable growing and developing his interest in nature and the environment, especially recycling.
His quiet presence and attention to detail in all he did will be missed by many. Go mbeidh se go deo i gChriost. His Month’s Mind Mass is on Sunday 13th January at 10 am in St. Joseph’s Church, Kilteevan.
