Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim, Frank Feighan is reminding householders to register their septic tanks and domestic waste water systems before the February 1st deadline, to be eligible to apply for remediation grant.

“Septic tank owners now just have a couple of weeks to register their systems ahead of the deadline on February 1st,” he said.

“I would like to remind householders that eligibility to apply for a remediation grant will not be possible for those who have not registered their systems.

“Risk-based inspections of septic tanks are due to commence shortly and owners of septic tanks which are found to be in need of remediation or an upgrade will be eligible for grant assistance.

“The vast majority of systems are expected to pass without any issues, but for those tanks needing remediation, grants of up to 80% of the cost of the remedial works, to a maximum of €4,000 will be made available. The grants are being specifically targeted at low income households.

“Protecting our water supplies is very important for the economy. A safe and reliable water supply is essential for tourism, agriculture and attracting foreign investment, particularly from ICT and pharmaceutical companies. We also have a duty to comply with a European Court of Justice ruling against Ireland, dating from October 2009. Ignoring this ruling will result in significant fines.

“All households will be notified in writing by their local authority in advance of inspections taking place so people should not be caught off-guard in terms of granting people permission to come onto their land to inspect tanks and waste water systems.

“It is very easy to register. You can go online to www.ProtectOurWater.ie; you can get an application form from your local council office; or in any Citizens Information Centre. Householders can also pay in person in County Council offices,” concluded Deputy Feighan.
