An historic plaque at the old Roscommon Abbey was the subject of extensive vandalism over the Bank Holiday weekend, it was revealed this week by a member of the local Roscommon Heritage Group.
Extensive damage was caused to parts of the old Roscommon Abbey, which is a listed national monument, with one plaque being completely destroyed. It was also reported that empty cans and bottles of alcohol were located at the scene when the discovery was made on Wednesday (yesterday).
This vandalism has angered members of the local Roscommon Heritage Group, with PRO Frank Scott condemning those who carried out the thoughtless and reckless criminal behaviour.
“This is a regular occurrence but we just want it to stop. It seems that people are using the Roscommon Abbey to conduct anti-social behaviour which has lent itself to ongoing vandalism for the last while,” he said.
The incident was reported to the local Heritage Officer Nollaig Feeney, the Office of Public Works and also the Gardai, who are now conducting an investigation.
