Bees Under Threat: Dr. Sarah Larragy to Discuss Pollinator Preservation in Castlerea

Dr. Sarah Larragy from Trinity College Dublin is set to deliver an insightful talk on the vital role of bees and other pollinators in our ecosystem. The event will take place next Friday, November 22, at 6pm in The Hub, Castlerea, and is organised by Cllr. Anthony Waldron.

Despite their crucial contributions to the environment, there has been a concerning decline in the numbers and diversity of bees and other wild pollinators. Dr. Larragy’s presentation will explore the key factors contributing to this decline and offer practical suggestions for supporting pollinators in local gardens and communities.

For her doctoral research, Dr. Larragy investigated the differences between wild Irish Buff-tailed bumblebees and other populations, including those from Britain and commercially produced varieties. She is currently engaged in an EU-wide project called RestPoll at Trinity College, which aims to equip society with the knowledge and tools necessary to restore habitats and enhance pollinator populations.

Dr. Larragy has a personal connection to County Roscommon; her mother, Maura Boyle, was born and raised in Ballintubber, and her grandparents are from Castlerea and Cloonfad. With many cherished childhood memories of the area, her family connection continues, as her parents, Dr. Joe Larragy and Maura, now reside in Cloonchambers, Castlerea.

This event welcomes everyone interested in environmental issues, farming, gardening, or simply enjoying nature. Join us next Friday, November 22, at The Hub, Castlerea, at 6pm for an engaging discussion on the significance of our pollinators.
