Another day, another sensational shootout at Dr Hyde Park. Davy Burke’s men are sitting pretty on top of Division Two of the Allianz League after they shot the lights out in the second half of their encounter with Monaghan, turning a 2-6 to 0-8 half-time deficit into a 0-25 to 2-14 win.
First-half goals from Davy Garland and Micheál Bannigan put the Rossies on the back foot, while Rory Beggan denied Ciaráin Murtagh on two separate occasions when the St Faithleach’s man tried to respond in kind.
Monaghan hit just one two-pointer, and six points from the Murtagh brothers put Roscommon in a good position.
After half-time, it was Diarmuid who led the charge, adding four two-pointers. Conor Hand was also in scintillating form as his electric pace yielded three points and a host of line breaks and other opportunities.
Monaghan hung in there bravely, with Conor McCarthy (two) and Rory Beggan coming forward to kick points that kept it tight, but Roscommon’s bench impact was the decisive factor, with Senan Lambe fisting a crucial score and Conor Cox landing 0-3 from two chances in the closing minutes, one from 45 metres out.
