County Championships coming up

40×20 County Championship: The Interclub titles are up for grabs at Junior B, Junior, Intermediate and Open grades. This year sees a radical overhaul of the format of this competition. There will be no singles as part of the ‘team of four’ format and instead combined points from two games of doubles will decide the result. More controversially, the games will now be timed and scores will be awarded on winning any rally, not just while serving. People will need convincing about this pilot format, given that strong serving is neutralised somewhat, as is a strong offensive (killing) game.

Roscommon will compete in the Junior B, Junior and Open grades and County Championships which will take place at the end of November in St Coman’s, Lisacul and St Brigid’s, Curraghboy. The 40×20 championship is not too long away now with Junior and Junior B singles and doubles to start at the end of November. The county final of the junior b interclub will take place in St Comans on 17th November at 7 pm between St Comans and the winner of Curraghboy and Mount Talbot.

The annual John Gaffney tournament which is for intermediate and senior players will take place on 8th and 9th December. Please see www.gaahandball.ie for entry form and details.

Mount Talbot Handball Club: Well done to all the members who played in the Club finals of the One-Wall League which concluded recently in the Mattie McDonagh Centre, Ballygar. The first final that was played featured Shauna Clogher and Aoife Campbell in the U-10 girls grade, which Shauna went on to win. Siobhan Treacy beat her sister Aisling in the U-10 plate.

The second final saw Joan Tully and Mary Quine compete in the Ladies Challenger plate. The players were very evenly matched but Mary went on to claim the title by the narrowest of margins. Newcomer Michelle Kelly took on Kate Coyle in the Ladies Challenger. Both ladies gave a fine performance, with Michelle coming out on top.

The U-8 boys final saw newcomer Kieran Keane beat Liam Clogher in an entertaining game. Matt Roche was pitted against Cathal Treacy in the U-14 plate which saw Cathal’s experience help secure the title. Mark Clogher and Mark Treacy played in the U-14 final which went to a tie-breaker. This was the closest of the matches but Mark Treacy held his nerve and went on to secure the top Juvenile title. Last year’s Juvenile winner Thomas Treacy stepped up to the plate this year and went on to beat Coman Coyle in a great game in the Men’s B grade. Sean Collins defeated Mike Holland in the B plate.

One of the most gripping of games was played by the doubles pairing of Jimmy Gately and David Kenny who defeated Seamus Kelly and his partner Joe Connor in the Masters Doubles. This game had the crowd enthralled right up to the end when only a single ace secured the title for Jimmy and David.

In the Ladies Open sisters Aileen and Mairead Kelly competed for the Tim Cormican Perpetual Cup. Both players had played some great handball to reach the final. The game ebbed and flowed but Aileen settled well into the game and claimed the title after winning in two straight sets.

The centrepiece of the day was the Men’s Open final contested between last year’s runner-up Robert Coyle and Liam O’Ceallaigh. Both players demonstrated great skill speed and accuracy, using low power serves. Robert was not to be denied and went on to claim the Martin Turley Perpetual Cup.

The evening rounded off with outgoing Chairperson Liam O’Ceallaigh addressing the crowd to thank all the club members, sponsors, friends, families and people that contributed throughout the year to make it as successful as it was. All those involved in organising the league competition and catering on the night were also thanked.

A very successful Table Quiz was held in Fallon’s pub, Ballygar last Friday night. Many thanks to all the people who travelled to attend this fundraiser.

The Club’s AGM was held last Sunday with a new executive elected for the coming year. The club wishes to say a sincere thanks to the outgoing executive for their dedicated hard work and commitment over the past year.

Juvenile registration day will take place on Sunday 18th November in the Mattie McDonagh Centre from 6 pm to 8 pm. Weekly training each Sunday will follow thereafter. Adult training continues in Four Roads Community centre on Monday & Friday nights and in the Mattie McDonagh Centre on Sunday & Tuesday nights.
