Late goals deny Roscommon in Traynor Cup
The Roscommon & District League had their first outing in this season’s Oscar Traynor Cup competition when they played the Galway League at Deacy Park, Galway.
Despite playing some really good football the Roscommon & District League were undone by two late goals with the game ended on a 4-2 scoreline in favour of the Galway League.
The Roscommon & District League were slightly the better side in the first half with David Cullen, Darragh Concannon, Danny Browne, Gregory Grogan and Gary Egan all playing particularly well.
The first ten minutes after the break proved to be the undoing of the visitors as the Galway League scored twice in that spell. With just five minutes played Eric Browne got a free header in the Roscommon & District League penalty area and he scored. Barry Moran added a second with a long-range volley five minutes later. The visitors soon got back in their stride and levelled the game with two well-taken goals.
With sixty-five played a fine passing move resulted in James Connaughton sliding the ball past the Galway ‘keeper and twelve minutes later Ger Fagan levelled the game after a neat pass by Shane Duffy. Just when it seemed Roscommon & District were on course to take a valuable point Keith Ward and Tommy Walls scored for the home side.
The Roscommon & District League have two home games against Limerick and Clare and they must do well in these games to make it to the next round.
