All-Ireland Junior Camogie Club Semi-Final
Four Roads (Roscommon) 2-8 Tara (London) 1-5
Four Roads are into another All-Ireland Junior Camogie club final after this hard-fought win against London champions Tara at Ballyforan last Sunday.
The Roscommon champions started and ended well and that saw them home safely. Tara closed the gap to three points in the final quarter of the game but a goal from Grainne Egan with two minutes to go sealed the win for Joe Mannion’s side.
Four Roads missed an early penalty when Cait Kenny’s shot was well saved by the Tara goalkeeper. Four Roads scored three well-taken points early on through Cait Kenny (two frees) and Sinead O’Brien, and then in the 14th minute a great Four Roads move ended with Lizzie-Glennon Tully shooting to the Tara net for an excellent goal. Cait Kenny then scored two more points to stretch the Four Roads lead and at half-time the home side led by 1-6 to 0-2.
Tara were by far the best team on the resumption and a couple of points and a well taken goal from Elaine Burke after seven minutes brought the right back into the game.
The exchanges were well contested now and the sides swopped points through Stacy Coen and then Gertie Dowd. Elaine Burke then pointed for the London side but Orla Gately was again on target for Four Roads. Then with six minutes left Stacy Coen’s free left just three between the teams.
With two minutes to go Four Roads were awarded a free and when Lizzie-Glennon Tully effort dropped short Grainne Egan was on hand to flick the ball home for her sides’ second, and match-winning goal.
Four Roads: B Mannion; C Rogerson, B Hughes, M Glennon-Kelly; M Hoey, P Lennon, D Kelly; G Dowd (0-1), L Dowd; E Tracy, G Egan (1-0), O Gately (0-1); C Kenny (0-5), L Glennon-Tully (1-0), S O Brien (0-1). Subs: G Dufficy for Treacy, O Hughes for Dowd.
Note: Four Roads will take on Myshall of Carlow in the All-Ireland final. The Carlow side beat Turagh/ Clonlara by 3-10 to 0-11 in the other semi-final played at Dr Cullen Park last Sunday.
A feature of that game was the performance of 48 year-old Nuala Quirke who scored 0-2 for the winners and she is joined on that team by her two daughters.
