Mary O’Rourke, the former Deputy Leader of Fianna Fail, and one of the country’s best-known politicians over recent decades, signed copies of her autobiography ‘Just Mary’ in Eason’s Bookshop, Roscommon, last Friday afternoon. The book has gone to the top of the Irish bestsellers’ list.

Mary O’Rourke, the former Deputy Leader of Fianna Fail, and one of the country’s best-known politicians over recent decades, signed copies of her autobiography ‘Just Mary’ in Eason’s Bookshop, Roscommon, last Friday afternoon. The book has gone to the top of the Irish bestsellers’ list. 

  Speaking to the Roscommon People, Ms. O’Rourke said: 

  “I’m delighted with the way everyone has responded to the book and I didn’t expect it to be as successful as it has been. But that is down to the people throughout the country who have supported it and have come to my book signings, so I really want to pay tribute to them,” she explained.

  “I am really enjoying travelling throughout the country. By the end of the tour I will have visited 40 towns and the people of Roscommon were great last Friday and so good to come out.

  “I met a lot of familiar faces and it really is emotional and enriching to meet a few old friends. I also would like to thank Mayor Tom Crosby and Senator Terry Leyden for coming along last Friday to support the signing,” she said.

  Mary explained that writing a memoir was not something she ever really had in mind but after losing her seat in the 2011 General Election she was prompted to put pen to paper. She also said that the loss of her seat was put into perspective when compared to the deaths which have marked low points in her life – those of her husband Enda, brothers Paddy and Brian Lenihan and nephew and former Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan Junior. 

  Although they have become more frequent in recent years, Irish political memoirs are still relatively rare. Even rarer still are political memoirs that are frank, newsworthy and fun –like this one from Mary O’Rourke.
