Take control of your health

Sonas, Cloverhill are organising a ‘Take control of your health’ Open Awareness Day in Gleeson’s Townhouse & Restaurant, Roscommon on Wednesday June 10th, 2015 from 2 to 5 pm.

This event seeks to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults. The main aim of the day is to encourage older people from the local community to learn about falls prevention, to learn about their nutrition, and to get tips and techniques in understanding and taking their medication.

Falls are a leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults with 3% of older adults in Ireland dying within six months of sustaining a hip fracture. In Ireland, 7,000 people over the age of 65 are admitted to hospital for the treatment of fall-related injuries each year.

This costs an estimated €402 million. The chances of falling and of being seriously injured in a fall increase with age.

“We can change this”, said Seamus Crawley, Director, Sonas, “by bringing greater attention to the many practical preventive measures that can be easily employed to keep our senior citizens safe.”

“Falls are not a normal part of aging and the resulting injuries can steal quality life from older people and their families,” said Seamus.

“This awareness day is an opportunity for older adults and their families and carers to learn how to reduce falls risks so our elderly friends and relatives can stay independent for as long as possible.”

Sonas encourage carers, healthcare professionals, older people and their families to attend. Free transport for those in rural areas can be provided.

People will have the opportunity to speak with a nurse, a pharmacist, a nutritionalist, and a physiotherapist. There will be presentations, an exercise workshop providing some simple home exercises to improve muscle strength and balance.

If you would like to attend, contact Maria in Sonas Cloverhill on cloverhill@sonas.ie or 090-6628882.
