Local Fine Gael Deputy Frank Feighan has welcomed advance payments totalling more than 18m to almost 5,000 Roscommon farmers as part of the Single Farm Payment (SFP) scheme.
“Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has informed me that, as from October 18th last, 18,199,482 in advance payments has been made to 4,944 farmers across County Roscommon,” he stated.
“These farmers represent more than 87% of farmers in the county who will receive a Single Farm Payment. Given the atrocious summer we’ve had, I am well aware of the very difficult weather conditions endured by farmers in County Roscommon over the last 10 weeks.
“Along with the horrendous weather, farmers have also been counting the financial costs of being forced to house animals, leading to the purchase of costly feedstuff.
“I hope that these payments made two months earlier than scheduled will provide some comfort for the farming community who continue to work in extremely harsh conditions,” he continued.
“I also want to pay tribute to my Government colleague and Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney who made successful representations to the EU Commission to secure these advance payments, on the basis of the difficulties being faced by farmers as a result of the poor summer weather.
“These monies to Roscommon farmers are part of the 600m which commenced to all qualifying farmers nationwide from October 16th, with balancing payments being made from December 1st,” he concluded.
