St. Michael’s School is ready to commence construction on a major new extension. This will significantly improve facilities and space for students and will allow the school to improve the autism specific sensory garden and the whole playground area.
Speaking to the Roscommon People this week, the school’s Board of Management has expressed its gratitude to Castlerea Community School for their generous contribution to this extension. The Parish committee in Castlerea have also been very supportive and the school has highlighted the exceptional cooperation of its neighbours.
Management say that the completion of this major new extension will enhance the specialist facilities for sensory integration, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy already available in school.
St. Michael’s caters for children with special needs and autism aged 4-18. Classes typically have access
to a teacher and two SNAs for six students. Additional staff include a school nurse, housekeeper and three part-time specialist-subject teachers. The primary curriculum is differentiated to meet the needs of individual students and the school is proud to be recognised for its achievements in the areas of digital technology, science and other initiatives including Special Olympics, Green Schools and art and drama. The post-primary curriculum includes L2LPs, junior cycle and QQI level 3.
The school also has a long tradition of supporting dual placement. This involves students attending their local mainstream school for a number of days each week and this maximises inclusion.
The entire school community feels very lucky to be situated in Castlerea. The town has a long history of being friendly and welcoming for students with special needs. The school day is enriched by access to local shops, facilities and workplaces.
