New figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) indicate that ten people in County Roscommon have died with Covid-19. To date, there are 345 confirmed cases in the county. The median age of those infected is just 44. These figures are up to date as of June 12th, 2020.
The breakdown of confirmed Covid-19 cases in County Roscommon shows a significant number of infections in Roscommon Town and Athleague/Fuerty. As of June 12th, there were 102 confirmed cases in the Roscommon Town area (population: 6,500), and also 47 confirmed cases in Athleague area. There were 23 confirmed cases in Cams/Cloverhill and 9 confirmed cases in Fuerty.
The fact that there have been at least 56 confirmed cases in Athleague/Fuerty reflects the existence of a cluster (during the peak of the crisis) at the Kepak Meat plant, where up to one-third of the workforce reportedly tested positive (many employees of the plant live in Roscommon Urban area).
The figures for Roscommon Town area and Athleague/Fuerty are in stark contrast to the figures for other parts of the county.
There were 47 infections in Athleague, where the approximate population is 550, and 23 in Cams, where the population is approx. 470. There was also a cluster in the Cams/Cloverhill area.
By contrast, Castlerea, with a population of around 3,000 people, has just 13 confirmed cases, and Ballaghaderreen, with a population of around 2,700, has had just six cases.
There were 15 cases in Athlone West, six cases in Elphin and five in Cloontuskert. A number of areas of the county had less than five cases, and these include Boyle, Strokestown, Knockcroghery, Rooskey, Frenchpark, Kiltoom and other areas.
