Garda Detective shot dead in Castlerea

President Higgins has led tributes to Detective Garda Colm Horkan (48) who died in a shooting incident in Castlerea late on Wednesday night.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána said: “It is with deepest sadness An Garda Síochána confirms the death of our colleague, resulting from fatal gunshot wounds received during an incident in Castlerea shortly before midnight on Wednesday, 17th June 2020”.

President Michael D Higgins has offered his deepest sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Detective Horkan, “and to all those who have been affected by this tragedy”.

Detective Garda Horkan is believed to have been on duty on his own when he responded to a call-out in the centre of Castlerea. It is understood that Detective Garda Horkan was shot with his own gun. A murder investigation is underway. A man in his 40s has been arrested and is being held at Castlerea Garda Station.
