Padraig Pearses are the new champions of Roscommon football. The Woodmount-based club defeated Roscommon Gaels by 1-11 to 1-9 in dreadful conditions at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday.
After some doubt as to whether the fixture would proceed (with Storm Ashley rising) the final went ahead as planned. Pre-match favourites Pearses were on top in the first half but John McGuinness’s goal kept the Gaels’ hopes of a first title in 20 years alive.
With the ferocious wind at their backs in the second half, the Gaels sought to keep in touch with Pearses. A scoring spree (five points in six minutes) reduced a six-point deficit to just one as the Gaels ‘stormed’ into late contention. However Pearses weathered the storm and finished strongly for a deserved win. The Fahey Cup is in their grasp for another season.
