FINAL RESULTS: Michael Fitzmaurice (II), Claire Kerrane (SF), and Dr Martin Daly (FF) have been elected as the three TDs for the Roscommon-Galway constituency.

3.22pm -COUNT 7

The results of the seventh and final count have just been announced at The Hyde in Roscommon by Returning Officer Olivia Bushell. Kerrane and Daly  have both been elected. Kerrance (SF) has been elected with 11,087 votes. Daly (FF) has been elected with 10,234 votes. Michael Fitzmaurice (II) was elected yesterday on the first count with 12,002 first preferences. The constituency of Roscommon-Galway has officially spoken and elected three TDs to represent them in the 34th Dáil

FG and Dolan made a valiant effort to secure a seat under what were indisputably difficult circumstances; however, they have come up short and finished fourth in this unpredictable three-seat constituency.

Vincent Beirne (Non-Party) → ELIMINATED IN COUNT 2

Cormac Ó Corcorain (Aontú): → ELIMINATED IN COUNT 4

Martin Daly (Fianna Fáil): +1862 → 10234

Andrew Mannion (People Before Profit-Solidarity): → ELIMINATED IN COUNT 4

Martina O’Connor (Green Party) → ELIMINATED IN COUNT 3

Alan Sweeney (The Irish People) → ELIMINATED IN COUNT 3

1.01pm – COUNT 6

No candidate has been elected. The lowest remaining candidate, Eugene Murphy (NP), has been eliminated having reached 5,779 votes.

The seventh count is underway with the distribution of Murphy’s votes.

Sinn Féin candidate Claire Kerrane benefited to the tune of 220 votes from Daly Finn’s transfers but is still short of the quota of 10,283 with 9,551 votes.

It is expected that both Kerrane and Daly (FF) will be elected following this count.

Vincent Beirne (Non-Party) → ELIMINATED IN COUNT 2

Martin Daly (Fianna Fáil): +96 → 7811

No candidate has been elected. The lowest remaining candidate Daly-Finn (FG) has been eliminated. The sixth count is underway with the distribution of Fine Gael candidate, Dympna Daly-Finn’s 2,425 votes. It is unlikely anyone will be elected on this count. Eugene Murphy (FF) has overtaken Aisling Dolan (FG) on this count, and the forecast is that Daly Finn’s transfers could favour Murphy based on geography rather than her running mate.

11.08am – COUNT 4

No candidate has been elected. The two lowest remaining candidates O’Corcorain (Áontú) and Mannion (PBPS) have now been eliminated. The fifth count is underway with the distribution of O’Corcorain’s 1031 votes and Mannion’s 1006 votes. It’s shortly before 10 pm in the Hyde Centre, and Michael Fitzmaurice has stormed back into the Dail.

There were 12,002 reasons to smile for ‘Fitz’ when the first count result was announced just before 9 pm. He had topped the poll in style, elected on the first count.

There was a flurry of activity here from around 7 pm onwards. Given the scale of their votes in earlier tallies, poll-topper Michael Fitzmaurice and Claire Kerrane and Dr Martin Daly all knew that they were destined to cross the winning line. A round of media interviews began.

All three are delighted, humbled and gracious. It’s a massive milestone for Dr Daly, who has just admitted that being elected a TD has been a lifetime ambition, one he says he kept to himself for a long time. Speaking glowingly of Fitzmaurice and Kerrane, the Ballygar man thanked his canvassing teams and supporters for the great campaign which has led to this success. He also paid tribute to Senator Eugene Murphy, wishing him well in his future endeavours.

Revealing, with a smile, that Dr Daly is his GP, Michael Fitzmaurice hailed his canvassing teams, who had done so much great groundwork in recent weeks. He was thrilled and humbled with the size of his vote, particularly as he was down a few thousand votes due to constituency boundary changes.

Deputy Fitzmaurice made it clear that Independent Ireland are very much up for being part of the next Government (should that opportunity present itself). But there will be a price, and that price will be series of packages that enhance the lives of people in rural Ireland.

Claire Kerrane is speaking to the media as I write. She and Martin Daly have both just exchanged words of congratulations. “Your name kept coming up when we knocked on doors” Dr Daly said. “People said you were doing the work”.

Now all three will set about continuing to ‘do the work’ for the people who have placed their faith in them.

It’s almost 7 pm in the Dr Hyde Centre in Roscommon, where a sense of anti-climax still persists, not that that will concern those who are soon(ish) to be crowned.

Most members of the media here, and several of the political activists/supporters present, have spent the afternoon rather nostalgic for the drama of election counts past.

Unfolding before us is that rarest of things… an election race that is unlikely to feature any drama on the last lap.

No journalist here is reaching for the word ‘cliffhanger’.

With election drama and the excitement of close finishes in previous elections not materialising this time, the near-torrential rain bouncing off the roof of the Hyde Centre seems fitting in a way.

All the signs are that the three pre-election favourites – sitting TDs Michael Fitzmaurice and Claire Kerrane, and first-time candidate Dr Martin Daly – will take the three seats in Roscommon-Galway.

Fitzmaurice will be elected shortly, when the first count result is declared. As stated earlier, he could surpass 12,000 number ones; he will certainly surpass the quota (of perhaps little over 10,000).

Later, hopefully tonight but by no means definitely, Sinn Féin’s Claire Kerrane and Fianna Fáil’s Dr Daly will also be elected.

After the distribution of Fitzmaurice’s surplus, several lower-placed candidates will be eliminated. Then the vote transfer process will begin in earnest.

We’re pretty sure we know the outcome. There will be a (new) Doctor in the House. Claire Kerrane will be returning too. Michael Fitzmaurice will lead them home. This is how Roscommon-Galway has voted. For the rest, the inquests begin.

No cliffhanger for the media/public… some soul-searching for prominent candidates for whom the race didn’t quite go as planned.

Michael Healy-Rae is in full flow on a TV screen in front of us in the media room here in the Dr Hyde Centre… but it’s the arrival of another well-known political figure that has captured some attention.

Outgoing Fianna Fail senator Eugene Murphy has just arrived. He offers a handshake and, as ever, is courteous. We have a very brief word. It’s obvious that he knows his Independent candidacy is not going to be successful.

Politics is a tough game, or business, call it what you will. With 100% of boxes in Roscommon-Galway now tallied, Murphy is on 4231. It’s a long way off what he needed if he was to be in contention this weekend.

At the other end of the spectrum, Michael Fitzmaurice, based on these tallies, will top the poll and be elected on the first count. He is the king, Eugene Murphy may be the king-maker.

Claire Kerrane of Sinn Fein and Martin Daly of FF are on course to join Fitzmaurice in the Dail. Kerrane is on 7930 (on tallies) while Daly is polling 7252. Turnout is down on 2020.

Aisling Dolan of Fine Gael is polling 4831, and is too far behind the others, even with Dympna Daly-Finn’s transfers to come.

When Murphy exits later, it will boost Martin Daly, and he could take the second seat.

There’s very little atmosphere here, at the moment at least. But political careers are being built, boosted, and bruised, to varying degrees.

Reminder: These are tallies, not official count results.

2.09pm

As tallying ends here at the Dr Hyde Centre, it doesn’t look like there is going to be any great surprise on the cards, and tallies indicate approximately 40,500 people cast their votes in Roscommon-Galway. If the tallies translate to the first count result, Michael Fitzmaurice (II) looks like he is going to top the poll. He is followed by Claire Kerrane (SF) and Dr Martin Daly (FF). According to the political pundits here at the Hyde, there is no realistic combination of votes that can see Aisling Dolan (FG) pass Dr Daly when counting gets underway.

124 out of 124 boxes opened (100%):

Vincent Beirne (Non-Party): 196

Cormac Ó Corcorain (Aontu): 781

The picture is quite clear according to the tallies here in Roscommon-Galway – Fitzmaurice maintains his lead, with Kerrane and Daly likely to take the other two seats.

12.19am

Fitzmaurice (II) looks like he is on track to top the poll, with a chance Kerrane (SF) may pass him out in the closing 43% of boxes.

It is looking likely Dr Daly (FF) will take a seat but there are a lot of transfers going to come into play, and where they are going to go is anyone’s guess as party lines, possible government party coalition transfers, and geography all appear to be having a massive impact on the election here in Roscommon-Galway.

Pattern emerging in Roscommon-Galway.

35 of 124 boxes have now been tallied here at the Dr Hyde Centre, 28.2% of boxes.

A clearer pattern is emerging, and incumbents Kerrane and Fitzmaurice appear to be safe. Dr Daly (FF) and Dolan (FG) are neck and neck, with 72% of the boxes

24 out of 124 boxes opened (28.2%):

Vincent Beirne (Non-Party): 63

Cormac Ó Corcorain (Aontu): 239

10.32am

We have the first indicative trend out of Roscommon-Galway, with 19 of 124 boxes tallied (15.3%).

There are plenty of boxes to be opened yet, but Fitzmaurice (II), Kerrane (SF), Dolan (FG), Daly (FF) and Murphy (NP) are all in contention.

Again, tallies and early days but a trend beginning to emerge.

With 73% of all boxes in Roscommon-Galway now tallied, Independent Ireland TD Michael Fitzmaurice is on course to top the poll.

It’s an extremely impressive outing by Fitzmaurice, particularly given that he had ‘lost’ a few thousand prospective votes due to boundary changes.

The reality is that Fitzmaurice is now established as the dominant force in Roscommon-Galway politics.

He’s currently on 8652 number ones, and on these figures he could surpass 12,000 on the first count.

Sinn Fein’s Claire Kerrane has also polled well and is certain to take a seat. She’s on 6186 with almost 30% of boxes still to be factored in.

Martin Daly (5568) looks set to take a seat and it may even be the second one. It’s not looking good for Aisling Dolan at this point while Eugene Murphy’s gamble is running as an Independent hasn’t worked out.

More updates to follow.

With well over half of the boxes in Roscommon-Galway tallied by noon, sitting TDs Michael Fitzmaurice and Claire Kerrane are setting the pace and will both be re-elected.

First-time Fianna Fail candidate Dr Martin Daly is polling well – as expected – and looks very likely to take a seat.

Fitzmaurice is topping the poll (on tallies) with 6,604 with 57% of boxes opened. Kerrane has polled very well too and sits on 5095.

Daly is on 4486, followed by Aisling Dolan (3435). Given the fact that votes in her heartland have been tallied, Dolan (Fine Gael) looks set to come up short.
