Charity Ball a big success

Almost 200 people attended the third Annual Roscommon Town Charity Ball in the Abbey Hotel on Saturday night last.   Organised by local women Ann Hynes and  Doreen Conlon the event was a resounding success. A special auction was held on the night and the items raised an additional 5,500 Euro.   The beneficiaries of this year’s ball are Breast Cancer Research, The Roscommon Special Olympics Fund and Chris Grogan’s Route 66 Garda  Challenge fund for UNICEF.   The auctioneer on the night was Claire Whyte of Whytes Auctioneers in Ballymahon and a number of local personalities also acted as guest auctioneers on the night. A number of items donated by local business people were auctioned including holidays, a mountain bike, rugby jersies and a signed photo (by the late Jimmy Murray) of the Roscommon team who won the All-Ireland senior football title in 1943.   Speaking to the Roscommon People afterwards Doreen Conlon said that she was ‘delighted with the response.’ Doreen added: ‘The people of Roscommon have come up trumps again and we hope to beat last year’s figure when it’s all added up — which is brilliant.’    A final figure raised will be published in a couple of weeks time.
