Roscommon footballer Donal Ward was taken to hospital after being injured while breaking up a fight in Cloverhill Prison, Dublin, last Sunday morning.
The Frenchpark man, who works as a prison officer in Cloverhill, received a shoulder injury while intervening in an altercation between a well-known violent inmate and an elderly prisoner. It’s believed Mr. Ward’s colleague suffered facial injuries in the scuffle.
According to media reports, the incident was prompted by a row over a hygiene-related matter.
“It seems the younger of the two was annoyed that the older man was not having showers and it all got heated and kicked off,” a source told The Herald, the Dublin newspaper.
It was while Mr Ward and his colleague were separating the two prisoners that they were injured. It is not believed the prison officers were attacked directly, but were hurt while stopping the violent assault on the more elderly of the inmates.
Mr Ward was taken to Tallaght Hospital to have his shoulder injury examined, but was later discharged.
His participation in Saturday week’s Connacht Championship semi-final against Sligo in Markievicz Park is now reportedly in some doubt.
