The consultant psychiatrist at Roscommon Hospital has strongly criticised the plans to close the Rosalie Unit at Áras Naomh Chaolain, Castlerea – and called for the decision to be reversed.
Writing in this week’s Roscommon People, Dr Charles Byrne confirms that, “at present moves are being considered to phase out the unit”, which caters for those with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
He said: “Managers from nursing homes have been brought in to select which patients they would take.” However, opposing the move, he added: “Any move to phase out the Rosalie unit would, I believe, be unwise…It baffles me.
“I believe it would be tragic to lose this invaluable facility. I hope there will be a change of heart in the best interests of this vulnerable patient group.”
His comments come as campaigners hold a public meeting in Hester’s Golden Eagle Bar and Restaurant on Thursday 11th of June, at 9 pm.
