Roscommon County Council received 50 complaints of illegal dumping and pollution to the environment last month, with trailer-loads of rubbish and dead rats reportedly blighting the county’s landscape.
Information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act shows how a significant problem remains in Co. Roscommon.
The local authority’s environment department received a disturbing complaint from a Strokestown resident.
“Over the last number of months, I have removed five dead rats from my garden and one from my neightbour’s house,” the person told the council on May 26.
“I have removed another dead rat today. I am growing very concerned as I have to walk my garden before letting my children out to play.”
It was also reported, on May 5, that widespread dumping had occurred in the vicinity of Roscommon town.
A person told the council that someone had “emptied a sheep shed and dumped 16/17 trailer-loads of rubbish” on their land.
On May 6, there was a report of dumping of seven or eight bags of rubbish dumped on the roadside and in a drain in Boyle.
A similar incident was reported in Shannon Valley, Ballaghaderreen, the very same day, with rats said to be rampant in the estate.
On May 8, it was reported that a dead calf had been dumped in a drain at Rathmoyle Cross, between Castleplunkett and Ballinagare.
There were also reports of rodents in Dalton Terrace, Ballaghaderreen.
