A dramatic late rally from Elphin just came up short in the AIB Connacht IFC final at King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park on Sunday. Final score: Crossmolina 1-7 Elphin 1-6. The Mayo champions dominated a dour first half and led by 0-6 to 0-1 at half-time. Indeed when Niall Coggins scored a goal for Crossmolina in the 5th minute of the second half Elphin were in real trouble. But Nigel Dineen’s men began to get a foothold and led by Fintan Cregg they worked their way back into the match. The margin was down to three by the 51st minute. In a dramatic end to the match Fionan Duffy pointed a free for the Mayo men in injury-time and it proved the winning score as a few minutes later, Elphin goaled. Nessan Lenehan was fouled and John Finnerty blasted the resultant penalty to the net. But the final whistle came to the rescue of the Mayo side and Elphin came up short by just a point. They will rue a number of bad wides as they look back on this final.
