Four Roads are champs again as comeback denies St Dominic’s

There was no fairytale ending to the season for St Dominic’s in Sunday’s Kepak Roscommon SHC final as Four Roads won their 37th title after a remarkable second-half comeback at Dr Hyde Park. In very windy conditions, Dominic’s had the aid of the elements in the opening half and they took full advantage. Two superb goals from Mickey Joe Egan in the 4th and 25th minutes saw the Knockcroghery men lead by 11 points at one stage (2-7 to 0-2) . But Conor Morris scored a crucial goal at the end of the half to give his side hope at the break with the score at St Dominic’s 2-8 Four Roads 1-4.

Four Roads set about reducing the deficit from early in the second half. Goalkeeper Noel Fallon’s huge puckouts were causing all sorts of trouble for Dominic’s and in fact one of Fallon’s long deliveries went all the way to the Dominic’s net but that goal was ruled out by referee Aaron Clogher. But Four Roads were chipping away at the Dominic’s lead and when man of the match Morris added a second Four Roads goal in the 55th minute the margin was down to just two. Points from sub Adam Donnelly and a Morris free levelled the scores by the 57th minute and when Donnelly flashed home a goal in the second minute of injury-time the Mickey Cunniffe Cup was on its way back to Tisrara. Final score: Four Roads 3-12 St Dominic’s 2-11
