The sun shone down from above last Friday afternoon as 40,000 electronic music dance fans (including yours truly) descended on Marlay Park, Dublin, where Swedish superstar DJ Avicii was the headline performer.
Excitement built to a crescendo throughout last week as buses made their way from Elphin, Strokestown, Roscommon and Carrick – to name but a few areas – to one of the most eagerly-awaited gigs of the year.
Also on the bill were drum and bass sensations Rudimental who warmed up the crowd with a number of their explosive chart hits. But the climax of the night arrived at about 9 pm when Avicii emerged on stage.
The 24-year-old wowed the fans with a banging house and electro set which of course incorporated all of his number one tunes from the last few years. Although there was a massive crowd, it was trouble-free and deemed a great success overall.
Meanwhile Paolo Nutini took to the stage for a second concert on Saturday evening. The Scot always goes down well with Irish audiences, and he didn’t disappoint last weekend.
It helps, of course, that he had a pretty strong line-up supporting him, and the crowd was well up for his set by the time Imelda May, Gaz Coombes and Alabama Shakes were finished with them.
