After a lethargic day of sorting and counting yesterday, with no count completed, things are heating up in Roscommon today.
So far, we have seen five councillors elected across two local electoral areas, Athlone and Roscommon.
In Athlone LEA, Cllr Emer Kelly (Independent) topped the poll with 1946 first preferences, followed by Cllr Tony Ward (Independent) who secured 1786.
Hot on Cllr Ward’s heels was John Naughten with 1750 first preferences. The quota in this LEA was 1403, with each of the three councillors being returned with significant surpluses to redistribute.
In Roscommon LEA, Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice (FF) polled 1853 first preferences and McDermott (FF) secured 1626. Both were deemed elected and Fitzmaurice’s transfers are now being redistributed.
We are still waiting on the first count from Boyle.
