Man injured during ‘serious incident’ at National Boxing tournament in Castlerea

A national boxing tournament which was set to take place in Castlerea this weekend has been cancelled following a very serious incident which occurred on the opening day of the event yesterday evening (Friday) in which a man was seriously injured.

Castlerea Boxing Club were hosting the ‘2024 National Boy/Girl 4 Championships’ in The Hub when an incident broke out between a number of people at the venue as a fight was about to begin in the ring.
A number of men wearing balaclavas and carrying a variety of weapons, including a machete, then entered the venue and got involved in the altercation before fleeing from the building.

A man in his 40s was treating for injuries at the scene and later transferred to Galway University Hospital for further treatment, and although serious, his injuries are not said to be life-threatening.

The Roscommon People are aware of video footage that is circulating on social media showing the chaos that ensued during the event.

The IABA have released a statement regarding the incident saying: “IABA is aware of a serious incident during the final stages of the 2024 National Boy 4 Championship quarter finals in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.

“That such an incident could occur at a children’s sporting event is abhorrent, and is roundly condemned by every member of the Irish boxing family. Gardai are investigating.

“IABA, its officials, host club Castlerea BC, and streaming partners, StreamSport, are ready to assist Garda with their inquiries in any way possible.

“Two more days of boxing were scheduled in to take place in this competition over the weekend. They have been suspended and the remaining days of boxing will be rescheduled.

“Understandably, there will be clubs, boxers, officials and supporters at a loss. But in the interest of their safety, there is no option; risk remains too high even if the competition proceeds behind closed doors.”
