The planned outdoor performance and public space area in Somers Park is expected to go to e-tender in the coming days and it is hoped the new facility may even be ready in time for this year’s Castlerea Rose Festival which is set to take place from July 26th to 31st this year.
The proposed new space is among a number of recent positive developments for the town including recent confirmation of substantial funding for food incubation units for An Chistin at the Castlerea Enterprise Hub and ongoing refurbishment works at the popular outdoor swimming pool.
Local councillor and businessman, Paschal Fitzmaurice, believes Castlerea will be a hive of activity this year.
“Work has started on the refurbishment of the outdoor heated swimming pool and that’s something I have been working on for the last two years,” he said.
“That will be completed in June. The people of Castlerea are very proud of the pool and last year saw record crowds using it.
“I am also delighted to announce that the outdoor performance space at Somers Park will go out to e-tender in the coming days. That will be a unique space and an exciting development and we are hoping it will be completed in time for the Castlerea Rose Festival so that we can run a few events there”.
Cllr. Fitzmaurice added that funding of approximately €2.9 million for the development of ten food incubation units at An Chistin would also create significant employment in the area.
“It has been a long road by it’s a very significant development for Castlerea,” he said.
“Like any town, we have our challenges but we are working hard with the Town Team and Enterprise Castlerea and other stakeholders to portray the town in a positive light”.
