Roscommon ladies choir wants you!

Auditions for Cór Comáin take place on August 31^st

Think you can hold a tune? Looking to meet new people and be part of a talented group? Well, Cór Comáin, an all-ladies choir based in Roscommon town, might just be for you!

The choir, which features members from Roscommon town and surrounds, is holding open auditions on Thursday, August 31^st at the Roscommon Arts Centre. Previous singing/choral experience would be a help but it’s not essential.

According to choir member, Pauline Clarke, the choir has gone from strength to strength in recent years.

“We meet as a group in Roscommon Arts Centre every Thursday from September to May. In practice we come together to explore beautiful music and breathe life into harmonies. Singing as part of a choir provides so many benefits to our wellbeing. Meeting new people, and being part of a community also adds to our sense of enjoyment,” she said.

As well as providing many benefits to existing members, the choir has also given back to the community, so far raising over €10,000 for various charities.

“Learning new pieces, mastering the breathing, and performing for audiences are all part of why we feel proud to be committed members,” Pauline says.

“Travelling to London to sing with the Hannah Brine UK Singers was a real highlight, as was singing in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh as part of the St Patrick’s Day broadcast.

“Every performance is special and when the audience appreciates your efforts it really helps to keep you motivated. Socialising at these events also helps to foster our sense of camaraderie in our group.

“Under the direction of Derek Mahady, a choral conductor, singer, pianist and music educator, this group has gone from strength to strength. Our membership is a variety of ages and backgrounds, connected through a love of singing”.

Other Cór Comáin members told the Roscommon People how “proud and privileged” they were to be part of the choir. Members say they have gained great friendships and that singing with the group brings them great joy.

“This is my first season with Cór Comáin, and I am really enjoying the journey so far. It’s very challenging and there’s a quite a lot of concentration needed, but it is really, really rewarding,” one recent recruit said.
