A number of Roscommon men in the Irish Army spent Christmas serving in Lebanon –including Cpl. Shane Mulryan, CS Tony Macklin, Private Cooley, Sgt. James Kelly and Capt. Gerry Casey. The men have sent greetings to loved ones back in Roscommon through the Roscommon People.
Celebrations commenced with Christmas Eve Mass by Chaplain Fr. David Tyndall. This was followed by Christmas Day Mass which was celebrated in the outposts located close to the Israeli border for the Irish soldiers serving with the United Nations in the name of peace.
Afterwards Christmas Dinner continued in the tradition of the commanding officer and the commissioned officers serving the Christmas Dinner to the soldiers. The operational patrolling and duties continued combined with plenty of calls between Ireland and Lebanon where messages were exchanged between loved ones.
There was also a commemoration to remember the sacrifices of fallen comrades who died in the area of operations in Lebanon.
The duties of these men involve monitoring of the Blue Line, supporting the Lebanon’s Armed Forces and assisting the people of Lebanon. Within the IRISHFINN BATT area of operations this involves the protection of civilians, humanitarian support, extensive mobile patrolling in co-operation with the Lebanon’s Armed Forces and ground holding and monitoring along the Blue Line.
