Barstool Boyos – 25th December

A Happy Christmas from the barstool boyos

This week last year…

Huh?

So much has changed since then for the Barstool Boyos…

Huh?

This week last year…we were in our local on Christmas Eve.

Oh, right…

Like that classic song says, I remember it well…

Go on…

We met at 6…

We met at 5.

I was on time.

No, you were late.

Ah yes, I remember it well…we had a pint with friends…

We had a pint alone.

A singer sang a Christmas Carol.

No, the pub bore murdered Fairytale of New York…

I remember it well. That magical Christmas snow!
There was none that evening.
How often I’ve thought of that Thursday…
Tuesday.
…night, when we had our last Christmas Week rendezvous.
We weren’t to know…
You walked me home.
I walked home with you.
Ah yes, I remember it well…

Not THAT well if you ask me!

I bought out of turn…an extra drink…

Yeah, I REMEMBER THAT WELL!

(They pause to ponder on the wilted promise of so much of 2020)

You’ll forgive me being a little emotional, nostalgic…

Of course!

I mean, what a year it’s been…

We took so much for granted.

Yeah, including that weekly visit to our local…

I know…

Last Christmas Eve, when we had those few pints, little did we know the mayhem that was to arrive into our lives…

That’s the thing about the pub bore, you never know when he’ll come in…

No, NOT HIM! Covid, the pandemic! We had no idea of the trauma 2020 would bring…

I know…we should have had ANOTHER pint.

Well, I dunno, it’s important to get home early on Christmas Eve. That’s why we always kept it to an hour or two. Christmas is about family…

Agreed. But we should have had another pint back in March, just before the first lockdown!

(They pause to compare notes on how they are both faring on buying Christmas presents, leading to a slightly embarrassing silence)

What a year…Dublin win the six-in-a-row in December in a deserted Croke Park.

Sport was turned upside down.

Life was turned upside down.

Anguish for so many families.

They are in our thoughts.

Stress for so many families.

They too are in our thoughts.

What did we learn?

A lot, perhaps.

We learnt that there are numerous heroes amongst us.

We did indeed. We have a lot to be proud of in this country. We are resilient, we are generous….

Our frontline workers in Roscommon have been heroic. And it’s been difficult for our elderly people, for young people too…

Eh…

Okay, for middle-aged people too!

Our businesses have been resilient…

Agreed!

We can get through this…

We WILL get through this. Roscommon Together!

Roscommon Together, Ireland Together, the world Together.

Both: Happy Christmas to all our readers, and stay safe!
